ARRAYED
ARRAYED
Arrayed Lansing Art Gallery , Lansing, MIO 40' x 32' x 30" Handcut paper 2022
Arrayed is an immersive and contemplative paper-cut installation, a blend of minimal yet powerful negative and positive shapes, artfully arranged to create a visually arresting experience.
Each element of Arrayed is carefully crafted and positioned to guide the viewer through a journey of introspection. The paper cuts, precise and delicate, form an intricate lattice of shapes that play with light and shadow, inviting viewers to explore the subtle interplay between presence and absence. The negative spaces, thoughtfully carved out, create moments of pause and contemplation, while the positive shapes stand as bold declarations within the delicate composition.
At the heart of "Arrayed" lies the enchanting story of the flying butterfly, a symbol of transformation and freedom. This narrative is artfully juxtaposed against large hand-cut circles, a hand cut portrait of five women and a striking wall-hung sculpture, enhancing the thematic depth of the installation. The butterfly, depicted in flight, weaves towards the circles, creating a dynamic and fluid movement that captures the viewer's imagination.
The large hand-cut circles serve as portals, framing the butterfly's journey and adding layers of meaning to the visual narrative. The wall-hung sculpture, with its intricate details and elegant form, complements the paper cuts and enhances the overall immersive experience.
Arrayed is more than just a visual experience; it is an invitation to engage with the essence of form and space. The negative and positive shapes work in tandem to create a dynamic tension that draws the viewer in, encouraging a meditative exploration of the intricate patterns and the silent conversations they inspire.
