Light as air Plain as paper Ellisvile Recreation Center, MO 3' x 3' 2' Handcut paper 2020
Responding to a set of curatorial criteria, this installation consists of three panels of watercolor paper suspended side by side, forming an evocative triptych titled Light as air, plain as paper. Â Each panel is adorned with intricate cuts at the bottom, skillfully crafted to resemble delicate clouds. These cuts create a unique and mesmerizing line of sight, inviting viewers to experience the sky as if on a dark, rainy day, with beams of sunshine filtering through.
The artist's meticulous hand is evident in every cut, each cut delicately formed to mimic the soft, billowing nature of clouds. The panels, carefully positioned to capture and play with light, allow glimpses of the wall behind, casting intricate shadows and illuminating the edges of the clouds.
The artist's choice of watercolor paper adds a delicate, almost fragile quality to the installation, reinforcing the theme of impermanence and the fleeting beauty of nature. The intricate cuts, while meticulously detailed, allow the panels to breathe and interact with the surrounding environment, making the viewers an integral part of the narrative. Through its delicate craftsmanship and profound imagery, the installation offers a moment of solace and inspiration, reminding us of the beauty that can be found even on the gloomiest of days.
