PARALLAX
Parallax Kranzberg Arts Center, St Louis, MO 4'x 3' x 2' Handcut paper, paint 2019
Parallax was created as part of Kranzberg’s year long exhibit centered around the theme “Chaos,.” This work explores Chaos as it manifests in the smallest and largest of cosmic elements.
This wall-hung installation, crafted from resilient yet delicate Tyvek and painted deep black, commands attention with its intricate design. The piece explores negative and positive shapes, revealing a delicate balance between presence and absence. The bold positive shapes contrast starkly with the voids of the negative shapes, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
Often mistaken for stone or metal, the artwork revels its fragility as visitors approach closer. The carefully carved negative spaces offer glimpses of the wall behind, suggesting hidden depths, while the defined positive shapes represent tangible aspects of our lives and identities.
The black paint adds mystery and introspection, while the Tyvek symbolizes resilience and adaptability. Parallax invites viewers to contemplate life's dualities—seen and unseen, presence and absence, light and shadow. It encourages dialogue about our perception of spaces, both physical and metaphorical.
