Thooli: This artwork features a central hammock made from repurposed sarees, symbolizing a thooli (traditional South Indian cloth cradle made with fabric) that gently sways infants to sleep. Surrounding the hammock are papercut figures of ancient goddesses and contemporary women, representing the community of caregivers who support mothers and newborns through rituals, nourishment, rest, and care. The piece highlights the need for postpartum policy reform, community support, and the preservation of ancestral knowledge that has been passed down through generations but is often overlooked or forgotten.
Solah Shringhar: This time-based artwork captures the artist’s self-portrait as she adorns herself in a specific sequence, referencing Solah Shringhar—the 16 traditional forms of adornment in Indian culture. Through jewelry and beauty rituals, women present themselves to the world, embodying femininity and self-expression. The piece explores the significance of these rituals, inviting reflection on self-care, self-presentation, and the perceptions of both the viewer and the subject.
The Bangle Project: This installation, made from donated bangles and red thread, was created with the help of volunteers, threading each bangle one by one. Inspired by conversations on domestic violence in the South Asian immigrant community, the artwork symbolizes a safe and trusted space. In Indian culture, red thread is tied around sacred objects as a wish-fulfilling practice, while bangles represent marriage and the societal ties that can confine women. By weaving these elements together, the artist creates a space where people can share stories of grief and trauma without judgment, seek support, and access resources to break the cycle of abuse.
