Thooli: Kodi (The Umbilical Cord) is the one sculptural component of Thooli, a multipart project centered on postpartum care and maternal experience. The installation considers the umbilical cord as both a physical and symbolic connection between generations, carrying stories of care, nourishment, ancestry, and belonging. It reflects on the enduring bonds that continue beyond birth while acknowledging the knowledge, traditions, and support systems that have been lost or transformed over time.
Rather than viewing postpartum care as a private responsibility, Thooli asks what becomes possible when communities, healthcare providers, and policymakers come together to address the emotional, financial, medical, and social challenges of the postpartum journey while honoring ancestral knowledge and embracing contemporary maternal care.
